Iberian Peninsula, situated in the most western part of Europe, today comprises of Portugal and Spain. Portugal, previously called Lusitania, developed its distinct identity during the Middle Ages. The name Portugal, derived from a Roman harbour city named Portus Cale.

A Península Ibérica engloba hoje Portugal e Espanha. Portugal, préviamente chamado Lusitânia, teve sua origem distinta durante a Idade Média. O nome Portugal derivou do nome da cidade Romana chamada Portus Cale.

Many tribes inhabited Lusitania in the early ages. One of the tribes were the Celts who, about 900 BC, formed a Celtic Federation called Lusitani.
The Celts, lead by Viriato, gallantly resisted Roman advances. Viriato was assassinated, in his sleep, by his own men bribed by the Romans. During 140 BC, the Romans conquered the region and implanted their way of life bringing also their farming and construction techniques. The Romans called the region Lusitania. In the 3rd century AD, Christianity was introduced to the region.
Lusitania was in turmoil from then on. After the fall of the Roman Empire, which took place in the 5th century AD, Germanic tribes vied for the control of Lusitania. From North Africa, the Moors invaded the South of Lusitania, and settled in the South of the Tagus river.
D. Afonso III conquered Faro, in the Algarve, and drove the Moors out of Portugal in the year 1249.

Várias tribos habitavam a Lusitânia no princínpio. Uma dessas tribos foi a dos Celtas que, por volta do ano 900 Antes de Cristo, formaram uma federação que chamaram Lusitani. Os Celtas, comandados por Viriato, resistiram galantemente o avanço dos Romanos. Viriato foi assassinado por próprios soldados comprados pelos Romanos.
Durante o ano 140 Antes de Cristo, os Romanos conquistaram a região e implantaram os seus costumes e técnicas de agricultura e construção. No século 3 , a Cristandade foi introduzida na região.
A Lusitânia esteve em luta desde essa altura. Depois do Império Romano caír, no século 5, tribos Germânicas lutaram pelo controle da Lusitânia. Os Mouros vindos do Norte de Africa, invadiram e povoaram o Sul do Tejo.
D. Afonso III conquistou Faro, no Algarve, em 1249, e expulsou os Mouros definitivamente de Porugal.
