TIPS FOR YOUR WINDOWS VISTA® - Page 2

Make Windows Vista® Fly!

Besides adding extra memory and a good graphics card, do these three things to improve performance:
  • Clean your Start-up
  • Speed up the Menu Show Delay
  • No Fancy Visuals
Clean your Start-up
To improve the way your computer starts up you can do at least three quick operations:
(If prompted to re-start your computer, select to do it later - do it when finished with all options below)

1 (a). How to Clean Start Up
Click on Start (the Windows ball with the flag at the extreme bottom left corner), then go to "All Programs" and scroll down until you find "Startup". When you click on "Startup", it should show "(empty)". If it does not, simply right-click on the items inside it and "Delete" all, one at a time (repeat process until it shows "empty". If you recognise any of the items there and really want one or more to start up when your computer boots up, delete only the others.

1 (b). How to Clean Start Up
Use the simple rule which prevents catastrophes: Not Sure? LEAVE IT!
Next, Click on Start and then "Run" which is normally located at the bottom of the right panel (if you cannot see the the "Run" command when you click start, you must place it there - to do this, right-click anywhere on an empty place of your task bar (the bar at the right of your Start button), click on "Properties", then the "Start Menu" tab at top, then "Customize" button. Scroll down until you find "Run Command". Activate it by clicking on the empty little box next to it. Click OK when finished the "Run" command will now be present when you click Start).
Let's start this again - Click on Start and then "Run", in the box type msconfig then the OK button. Within a few seconds a box will appear. In the box, click the "Startup" tab at top. Now UN-select those that are not important to start-up. The more you un-select, the faster your computer will boot up and the more memory you will have available. After you close this box, the system will ask you if you wish to Re-start your computer. Select to Re-start Later. Let's finish all options first
NOTE: After you work with this option and restart your computer, a System Configuration box will appear, saying that you have made changes to the way Windows® starts. Simply select the box "Don't show this again" and click OK and, if the Configuration box opens again, click OK once more and all is done.

2. Speed up the Menu Show Delay
This option will speed up considerably the time it takes to show the menu box when you click on Start. It's really worth it!
Click on Start and then "Run", in the box type regedit then the OK button. Within a few your Registry will appear. Double-click "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" to open (if not already open) and select "Desktop". On the right panel, double-click "MenuShowDelay" and change the value 400 to 1, Click the OK button and close the registry box. That's it, your menu box will appear in a flash! Leave the rest alone unless you know what you're doing.
Select "Continue >>" below.
