An Open Letter To All South Africans Greetings; It is upon your backs and due to your sweat and toil that there is a South Africa at all. Your country was created by the work of generations of workers; by the work of miners, by the work of farmers, by the work of shop keepers, by the work of your grandfathers, by the work of your fathers, by your sisters, brothers, sons and daughters. Remember this always and be proud; but also remember this, that no country was ever built by politicians, by criminals, by sell-outs, or by any social parasites who falsely claim to represent the workers or the people. The neo-colonialists who form the current government along with their high paid stooges in the banking, mining, manufacturing, military, and quasi-public organizations such as COSATU, ESKOM, TELKOM, SABC, and others are the ones who falsely claim credit for your hard work. These same ones are those who deny you decent wages, while they ride around in BMW's, who deny you decent housing, while they live in luxurious homes, who deny you adequate food for your children, while they wine and dine like kings. These are the ones who are retrenching the workers at record levels, these are the ones who do not pay the pensioners, the teachers, the health care workers; these are the ones who do not listen to your children when they cry in hunger, who do not stop the criminals from robbing, raping, and killing you; and yet these are the ones who claim to know what is best for you. These are the ones who claim to support freedom, but wish to take away your constitution; these are the ones who claim to speak for you, but label you as enemies of the people should you speak for yourselves; and these are the ones who threaten to crush you as counter-revolutionaries should you choose to support an opposition party. These are the ones who say they have given you freedom to vote, to live where you wish, to work where you wish, to furnish your children with adequate schooling: but these are the same ones who tell you who you had better vote for or else: it is under their rule that the slums and squatter camps have grown: it is under their rule that so many are out of work: it is under their rule that your children do not have books and school supplies. If you are free why are they photographing and thumb-printing you and making you carry a national identity book so they will know who you are, and where you are? Another government did that to you, and now this one is doing it to you, is this an aspect of freedom or is it a foretaste of things to come? Workers, your pension funds are being raided by the stooges of this government so they have the money to stay in power; did they give you the freedom to discuss this, did they even ask you if you wanted this? Is this freedom? Under this so-called "free government", more people are in prison than were in prison under the old government: under this "free government", more die in police custody than under the old government: what price freedom? This "free government" blames the old government for all the problems, but it seems as if they have taken the worst of the old government and use it against the very people they claimed to have "freed" from the past. Are you free? If you are you could discuss the contents of this letter openly, and read aloud from it in public assembly without fear; if you wish to test your freedom, try and do so and see just how free this government decides you will be. Citizens! Workers! This is your country, you created it, you built it, do not let these few take it away from the many. Resist them at every turn; deny them the power to enslave you. If they say they will crush you, then rise up and crush them. You will remain free only as long as you work and fight for freedom. Freedom is not given; freedom is built and defended by the many against the few. No people, no country on this planet was given freedom; when you look and see a free people, you are looking at a people who demanded and fought for their freedom. Rise up and let your voices be heard, shout out those words that every tyrant fears; "WE WILL BE FREE!"
